1982
– Starts Boxing

10 years old starts boxing at Workington Town ABC. At 16 starts (1986) boxing for Croydon ABC and then goes on to box for the Army team at 19. +10 years of boxing in different environments and under different coaches, taught James much of what he puts into triathlon coaching today.

1989
– Joins the Army

Joins the Army (passes-out with best in physical training), his love of physical training inspires James to completes his first Physical Training instructors course in 1992 and in 1994 goes onto complete his L2 PTI’s course and then leaves the Armed forces and boxing a little while later.

1996
– Completes 1st Tri

In search of the same type of mental & physical challenges as the Army and boxing had given him, James runs the London marathon in 1995, he then finds triathlon and in 1996 – Joins Thames Turbo & does his first triathlon. He moves to Australia in 1997 and in 1999 he is selected for World Tri Champs Canada (AG), his swim still not so good and his is the last bike in transition from the swim.

2000
– Launches Optima Racing Team

Sets up Optima Racing Team, with a handful of friends with the goal of simply creating a team environment with like minded individuals. This has been recognised as Optima Racing Team and is now one of the most successful clubs in the UK.

2003
– Completes M.Sc. Sports Science

Still looking to further his education to better understand the sports sciences completed his M.Sc. Sports Science Brunel Uni. This also allows James to cut through the fallacies and misconceptions that where really starting to grow in the more lucrative areas of sport and fitness.

2007
– Sets-up Optima Junior Racing Team

Sets up Optima Junior Racing Team, taking absolute beginners and getting them to junior elite level and in 2014 onto triggering World Class selection criteria for British Triathlon. He also became the London regions Academy head coach for British Triathlon.

2011
– Coaches Ironman Age Grouper to sub 9hrs

Helps Karen Axldottier go sub 9.25 at Ironman Austria (AGer & mum of two), also Helps Timothy Bishop go sub 9hrs at Ironman (full time Lawyer and also AGer who’s first Ironman was closer to 11 hrs)

2012
– Coaches Triathlete for London 2012 Olympics

Helps Gillian Sanders to Olympic games and then onto her first top 10 at a WTS race. Following that onto a team silver medal at the commonwealth Games in 2014

2014
– Three juniors progress to the U23 elite

Helps first junior podium at European Cup and in 2015 helps three juniors progress to the U23 elite racing circuit (having coached them form 13/ 14 years old) and secures the National Club Relays Championships.

2015
– Launches Virtual Triathlon Coaching

Optima celebrates its 15th Anniversary. Helps Gillian to her first top 5 WTS. Helps 4 males to Kona. James launches Virtual Triathlon Coaching online to try help triathletes better their performance and to spread his “years on deck” knowledge outside of Optima Racing Team.

Early 2016
– Publishes First Triathlon Book

James is the author of the ‘The Triathlon Training Book’ due for release February 2016. He is also in preparation for Rio 16 with Gillian.

– Qualifies for Kona

Unselfishly James qualifies for Kona so he can check out the Kona course personally to ensure the preparation of his athletes is optimum :).
